The Three Bulgarian Airports and Which to Use

Choosing the right arrival airport saves significant drive time — and for a property viewing trip, your time is valuable.

Sofia Airport (SOF)Best for: Veliko Tarnovo, central Bulgaria, northwest

The main hub. Most flights, most airlines, year-round service. Drive time to Veliko Tarnovo: approximately 2.5 hours on a good road. To the northwest (Vidin): 2.5–3 hours. Most UK buyers flying to view property use Sofia.

Varna Airport (VAR)Best for: Black Sea hinterland, northeast Bulgaria

Black Sea coast airport. Seasonal — most flights run April to October. Drive time to Black Sea hinterland villages: 30–60 minutes. For northeast Bulgaria property near Shumen or Targovishte: 1–1.5 hours.

Plovdiv Airport (PDV)Best for: Rhodope Mountains region

Smaller but growing. Some direct UK routes. Drive time to Rhodope mountain villages: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Much more convenient than flying to Sofia for Rhodope property buyers.

Airlines Flying UK to Bulgaria

Wizz Air

London Luton → Sofia. Often the cheapest option. Good frequency year-round.

💡 Book 6–8 weeks ahead for best prices. Avoid peak summer if viewing for property purchase.

Easyjet

London Gatwick → Sofia. Seasonal routes from other UK airports.

💡 Good baggage allowances compared to Wizz. Useful if bringing documents or samples.

Ryanair

Multiple UK airports → Sofia. Routes vary by season.

💡 Check Manchester and Edinburgh routes — sometimes cheaper than flying via London.

British Airways

London Heathrow → Sofia.

💡 More expensive but direct, reliable and better for business class if viewing multiple properties.

Bulgaria Air

London Heathrow → Sofia. Year-round.

💡 National carrier. Good reliability. Often has sales in autumn and winter.

When to Book for the Best Prices

For a property viewing trip: avoid July and August — peak tourist season means higher flight prices and accommodation costs. The best viewing windows are May–June and September–October. Weather is excellent, prices are lower and you see the country in realistic conditions.

Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the best prices on budget airlines. Last-minute deals exist but are unreliable for a planned viewing trip.

Midweek flights (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) are consistently cheaper than weekend departures on all routes.

Getting from the Airport to Rural Property Areas

Car hire is essential for property viewing in rural Bulgaria. Public transport does not connect villages reliably. Budget approximately £25–50 per day for a small car. Book in advance — airport pickups are significantly cheaper when pre-booked.

Flight Delays and Compensation

Flights to Bulgaria occasionally face delays — particularly budget carriers in peak summer. If your flight is delayed over 3 hours or cancelled, EU261 regulations entitle you to compensation of up to €600. Two services handle the claim on your behalf:

If you are flying to Bulgaria specifically to view properties, plan for at least 5–7 days. A rushed 3-day trip rarely gives you enough time to see enough properties, visit the right villages, talk to locals and get a feel for whether the region is right for you.

Our Complete Bulgaria Bundle includes the full pre-purchase checklist — covering exactly what to check at every viewing — plus the regional breakdown so you arrive knowing which villages to focus on.
