Sofia Airport to Veliko Tarnovo — Your Complete Transfer Guide

Option 1 — Hire a Car (Recommended)

For anyone visiting Bulgaria to view properties, hiring a car at Sofia Airport is by far the best option. You need a car to visit villages — public transport simply does not connect rural areas reliably. Hiring at the airport means you have wheels from the moment you land.

The drive from Sofia Airport to Veliko Tarnovo takes approximately 2–2.5 hours on the A2 Hemus motorway — a modern, well-maintained road. The route is straightforward: follow signs for Hemus motorway (A2) heading east toward Varna, exit at Veliko Tarnovo.

Book car hire in advance — airport pickup rates are significantly lower when pre-booked compared to walk-up prices.

Option 2 — Bus

Buses run from Sofia Central Bus Station (not the airport — you need to get to the city first) to Veliko Tarnovo. Journey time is approximately 3–3.5 hours. Tickets cost approximately £8–12 each way. The bus station in Veliko Tarnovo is centrally located.

For a property viewing trip, buses are impractical — you cannot visit villages without a car, and you lose significant time travelling from the airport to the bus station and waiting for departures.

Option 3 — Taxi or Private Transfer

A private transfer from Sofia Airport to Veliko Tarnovo costs approximately £80–120 depending on the company and vehicle size. Book in advance through a reputable transfer company — airport taxi touts should be avoided. This is a reasonable option if you have heavy luggage or prefer not to drive, but you will still need local transport once in the Veliko Tarnovo area.

The Drive — What to Expect

The A2 Hemus motorway from Sofia toward Varna is Bulgaria's best road — dual carriageway, well-signposted and in good condition. The VT exit is clearly marked. Once off the motorway, roads are good but more rural. GPS works well throughout. Google Maps and Waze both function reliably in Bulgaria.

Petrol stations are plentiful on the motorway. Fill up before leaving the motorway if heading to more remote villages afterward.
